Member Pathway Agreement
CPA Australia has a Member Pathway Agreement (MPA) with ICAN.
Pathway to CPA membership
The following steps demonstrate the pathway to Associate CPA membership for full members of ICAN under the conditions of the current MPA.
Step 1: Determine your eligibility
You may be eligible to apply for CPA Australia membership if you:
- are a member of good standing and not currently subject to any disciplinary sanctions or investigations and payment of fees
- did not gain entry to ICAN membership through another mutual recognition agreement (MRA), any other similar pathway agreements or any special member pathway
- have successfully completed the ICAN CAP-II and/or ICAN CAP-III, and the ICAN practical experience requirement in case of CAP-III
- hold a degree recognised by CPA Australia as being at least equivalent to Australian bachelor degree level, or have at least five years' senior work experience (current at the time of application) in professional accounting.

Some of our professional body pathways require evidence of professional work experience.
Step 2: Apply
Complete our online application and submit with the required documentation, including your application and membership fee.
In your application, nominate ICAN as the professional body with whom you studied and hold membership.
Step 3: Verification and outcome of your application
Your application will take approximately 10 to 15 working days to verify. We will send you an email advising you of your assessment outcome.
Step 4: Advance to CPA status
Once you become an Associate member of CPA Australia via the MPA, you must successfully complete the following subjects of the CPA program according to your verified entry pathway.
Pathway 1
Applicants who have completed ICAN CAP-III and ICAN practical experience requirements
- Ethics and Governance
- Strategic Management Accounting
- Financial Reporting
- Global Strategy and Leadership
Pathway 2
Applicants who have completed ICAN CAP-II only
- Ethics and Governance
- Strategic Management Accounting
- Financial Reporting
- Global Strategy and Leadership
- Two elective subjects in the CPA Program
- CPA Australia's Your Experience requirement
When complete, you will advance to CPA status, receive a CPA certificate and will then be able to use the letters CPA after your name.
Step 5: Maintain your membership
A member of ICAN who gains membership of CPA Australia under the terms of this MPA must retain their membership with the original membership body.
