CPA Australia has a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with MIA.
Pathway to CPA membership
The following steps demonstrate the pathway to CPA membership for full members of MIA under the conditions of the current MOU.
Step 1: Determine your eligibility
Pathway 1
You may be eligible for Associate membership of CPA Australia if you:
- are a full member in good standing with MIA with at least 10 years membership
- did not gain entry to MIA membership through another mutual recognition agreement (MRA) or any other similar pathway agreements
- have at least 10 years of relevant work experience (at the time of application) as demonstrated in your detailed curriculum vitae
- hold a university degree recognised by the Australian Government Department of Education, Skills and Employment as being at least equivalent to Australian bachelor degree level. This will be determined during the verification of your application
Pathway 2
You may be eligible for Associate membership of CPA Australia if you:
- are a full member in good standing with MIA with at least 5 years membership
- did not gain entry to MIA membership through another mutual recognition agreement (MRA) or any other similar pathway agreements
- have at least 5 years of relevant work experience (at the time of application) as demonstrated in your detailed curriculum vitae
- hold a university degree recognised by the Australian Government Department of Education, Skills and Employment as being at least equivalent to Australian bachelor degree level. This will be determined during the verification of your application
Work experience evidence
Some of our professional body pathways require evidence of professional work experience.
Step 2: Apply
Complete our online application and submit with the required documentation, including your application and membership fee.
In your application, nominate MIA as the professional body with whom you studied or hold membership.
Step 3: Verification and outcome of your application
Your application will take approximately 10 to 15 working days to verify. We will send you an email advising you of your assessment outcome.
Step 4: Advance to CPA status
Once you become an Associate member of CPA Australia you must successfully complete the following subjects of the CPA Program according to your verified entry pathway.

- Ethics and Governance
- Financial Reporting
- Strategic Management Accounting
- Global Strategy and Leadership
When complete, you will advance to CPA status, receive a CPA certificate and will then be able to use the letters CPA after your name.
